My newest video ICYMI!

I started making urban planning videos because I wanted to share what I learned with my friends and make this topic more widely recognized.

So I'm officially starting a new series about urban planning fundamentals - basic concepts that you can easily share with your friends or family to teach them the same thing. Let me know what I should cover next!

🎉THANKS FOR 50K!!!🎉 we now have more people than the city of Urbandale, Iowa, USA (46,729)

I planned to release a new video today, but I didn't like the script and editing, and I don't want to rush out content I don't like. So it will come out next week instead.

shoutout to you if you're from urbandale 🥰🥰💅💅

Toronto's waterfront is one of the fastest growing areas in Canada, but the city has a choice: all those new neighborhoods can either be car dependent, (and add more traffic to the already bad Gardiner Expressway) or transit oriented.

Thats why the Waterfront East LRT is one of the biggest opportunities in the city, and it DESPERATELY needs funding to be built as soon as possible, since many areas haven't been developed yet.

This great video by Transitthinker further explains why this is SO important:

Ever since I started making urbanist content one year ago, I always wanted to talk about suburbia and how it's basically all a giant liminal space. This video hopefully fills that gap.

I know a lot of my content so far has been a bit repetitive and generalized, so going forward I'm planning on doing more unique localized content, addressing urbanism in my own city and more specific topics that I feel haven't been covered by others.

Thank you all <3

I loved ‪@KianaDocherty‬'s new video on drive-thrus. She's not an urban planning channel but she breaks down how fast-food chains design their stores and menus to manipulate you.

Drive-thrus are terrible for cities. They are inefficient, financially insolvent, and neglect anyone outside a vehicle. But corporations love them because they generate a lot more sales by preying on impulse purchases, as Kiana explains.

The inherent problem is our car-dependent infrastructure. Cities can ban drive-thrus with zoning laws, but people will just order more through food delivery apps, because walking outside is too dangerous, far, and unpleasant.

I can make a whole video just about drive-thrus.

Did you get to see the solar eclipse? I was unfortunately busy with school projects :(

Anyways check out my Instagram! I'm posting random aesthetic clips of trains and cities here and there between videos. www.instagram.com/flurfdesign/

Might start properly making short-form content too. Although I find it hard to explain these topics in such a short amount of time. Let me know your thoughts!

Mike from ‪@strongtowns‬ tried crossing a stroad while dressed in high-vis gear and carrying a ludicrously big flag...... and most cars still didn't stop for him.

Another example of why road safety has just as much to do with infrastructure as behavior, as I explained in my road safety video: https://youtu.be/Z31YZj1kwiA

I highly recommend watching this video as it also brings up solutions that an average person like you can get involved in to prevent more people from dying.

ICYMI, watch my latest video! (maybe while you're commuting...?)

Also huge thanks to ‪@studio.leonardo‬ once again for coming on and sharing her amazing thoughts. Definitely go check out her channel if this kind of topic interests you.

In my previous video I showed some cities that have reformed their zoning/parking laws, and here's another great example of what that can look like.

This new development in Ontario Canada is part of a larger redevelopment project centered around the GO(regional rail) station, and features mixed-use buildings with bike paths and dutch-style protected intersections.
