I have made a twitch channel, thus damning my soul forever. Anyway, links here so you can learn how much I hate the anime you love, listen to me rant on the nuances of anime women or yell at me incessantly via the chat to review ā€˜Cory in the Houseā€™.

www.twitch.tv/theanimedetective

Time zoneā€™s being what they are, Iā€™ll have to think what day and time to try it. First up will be Space Marine 2, because who doesn't want to burn the xenos for the Emperor? Itā€™ll be horribly scuff, so come hang out.

Also I came across a fan translation of some manhwa a few weeks ago, and while the translation itself was fine, the oddest thing was the insistence of the translation group to flirt and chat in the margins.

Every panel, while signing who it was by, theyā€™d have running commentary on the scenes, thirsting over characters, referencing inside jokes and making non subtle passes at each other with emoji use. Eventually I died of cringe and the pure distraction of it all. All I can remember of the story now is that it was royalty isekai trash.

Is this common? Or did I just come across a rare nexus of cringe manifested in a translation group?

Drowsily editing late at night leads to some cracked visual concepts. All Iā€™m saying is, cursed as it may be, blame lack of sleep when the video releases for what you see.

I think everyone has some good anime that they know of, and for whatever reason, just donā€™t watch even knowing it's apparently good. I have several. Odd thing is, I canā€™t really articulate why I haven't sat down with them. I canā€™t say laziness can I? As I often read trashy manhwa and 10 chapter isekai manga with no updates for years. Iā€™m certain Iā€™m not alone in this silliness.

Oh and I think I'll stream on twitch, for those who care to know. As for what.... 2 hour rant about the side characters in romance anime who get constantly bullied while I play solitaire I suppose? Life as a sidekick to a romantic comedy MC must suck.

I have once again come to provide you with a single meme, enjoy. Also, for those craving more of my flat tone and canā€™t wait for the next video, Iā€™ll be - as most tiny YouTubers with more than 5 subs attempt - trying my hand at streaming. Nothing serious, but as a bit of fun occasionally, as most of my freetime is locked up in editing after all. Where, how and what however, I have no ideas about, but you will be able to yell at me in real time, so there's that.

I also watched the Vtuber anime, and it really does get the whole community and vibe around it with impressive accuracy (IE, how unbelievably down bad the fans are). Though I do doubt the recent episode where a mildly unhinged viewer turned stalker had a wholesome moment with the MC, instead of attempting to lick the doorknob of her apartment.

I mean, have you not seen Perfect Blue?

I also wrote this while on zero sleep. Iā€™ll have to spend the rest of my day in autopilot mode hoping nothing requiring complicated thinking pops up, and that every conversation plays out like its Skyrim, otherwise Iā€™m screwed.

I long for sleep.

Pushing through with the new video. If youā€™ve seen my edit posts on twitter, you could guess the topic by now. Delay on the novel update for Patreon too, but itā€™ll come, as I do keep my promises.

Been very annoyed (again) at revenge manhwa in particular lately. I keep seeing generally fun, if trope-ridden ā€˜betrayedā€™/ ā€˜kicked outā€™ / ā€˜beaten by Xā€™ style stories with the tacked on concept of rewinding time in some form to becoming a teenager/kid. I know why it's popular (ā€œwow imagine restarting a shitty life! Just like YOUR life reader! Hint hint!ā€), but my god I cannot enjoy revenge based stories when it undermines the whole point by just wiping the slate clean.

What's the point in making the villains thoroughly suffer if they have no understanding of why it's happening? It's just hollow.

The better versions of this at least ATTEMPT to make the time travel concept difficult. Iā€™d forgive 80% of the stories using this trope if they just added a downside that wasn't overcome in 2 seconds by the MC.

But for most of them, it's literally a story of wanting to have your cake, and eat it too. (IE, ā€˜I want revenge for horrible actions taken against me, but I donā€™t want to have any horrible actions actually taken against meā€™). There are deeper reasons why there are so many stories like this, but Iā€™m just here to complain and whine as usual.

So, to that point - any book, manga, manhwa revenge stories that DONā€™T invalidate everything with ā€˜age regressionā€™/time travel style tropes yall recommend (or one with a suitably harsh downside)?

Neat update to the GFL video, now with two sets of subtitles. Spanish subs were provided by @zanzibarland_r from my patreon and another helper @heavymetalmixer made the English subtitles.

No longer will we have to suffer the horror of automatically generated English subtitles, and Spanish speaking GFL fans can now enjoy getting confused by my train-wreck of a video too. Thank you to both of them!

Iā€™ve been reading more liteRPG or ā€˜western isekaiā€™ books while on the bus lately. Iā€™ve found some hits, a few misses too. Generally, I find the misses tend to lose focus on the core of the narrative, actually somewhat similar to the Japanese ones, where they can start with a good concept, but it just frays out on them, becoming a ā€œand thenā€ series of events that fail to capture much tension or interest.

Another issue is how quickly characters turn to doing evil stuff, but with poor foreshadowing. I read one where the MC had a ā€œhope others can make it, and Iā€™ll help where I canā€ mindset. Kind of typical of such an MC, but fine. Yet not far into the second book, he did a 180 becoming a selfish schemer prepared to do some pretty bad stuff. It's not bad that he became such a character, but the author's attempts to justify it were very weakly made. It's like if Tanya suddenly became a heroic good girl to fight against the empire after being gifted a flower by a sick child once - it just doesn't fit.

In the end it comes back to what we always see, no matter the cultural startpoint - great ideas, poor execution. But the Japanese and western modern day stuff is interesting enough that I'd recommend trying both out.

Next video is certainly going to be longer. Probably my longest unless I get creative with the script, so look forward to that. But I have a fair bit to say about the next topic.

In other news Iā€™ve been playing free horror games, and lordy, they all feel the same with some kind of really pathetic chaser enemy you canā€™t kill in a very linear dull environment. The more interesting thing is lots of them get the art and visuals around the enemy decent enough, but then the monster itself is just like, a stock asset or worse, and feels super out of place. I'm not sure what I expected with free games though.

I'm still waiting for a game/novel isekai where the main character wants to actually go home, and treats the world as non-real for that purpose. I feel like there could be some cool drama as a MC treats the isekai world people as just NPCs as a form of coping or something. Or, if the MC isekaiā€™d into a novel/game they wrote personally, does this not make them the god of that world? I feel like there should be more alternative stories we can write into these concepts, even if we still allow for ā€˜suddenly all cool people in the world setting now love me instead of the original main character! wow!ā€™.

So new video out, hope you enjoyed it. Iā€™ve started to prepare for the next video, whose topic I had to change yesterday after realizing the show had a movie coming out soon. But now Iā€™m back on track.

Anime wise Iā€™ve seen the Russian girl show, and I honestly feel bad for some of the fans. Iā€™ve had people tell me the sister character is the best girl (true) then follow up with essentially copium about how sheā€™ll get with the main character because they have the best chemistry etc. As I have said before - my brother in christ, the show has ā€˜Aylaā€™ in the damn title, putting aside the sister angle, at what point did you lose perspective when watching a damn romcom? Do you remember the last anime with a girl's name in the title where she DIDN'T get with the main character?

Though I do get it, the sister is an objectively more fun character, almost feels a waste to have her as a side character (though Alya is fine). Partially, it's underdog favoritism, but I find it more shocking that some people are so emphatic that ā€˜theres a chanceā€™ Ayla won't end up with MC.

But Iā€™m just salty because I canā€™t help but think about things on a metalevel. It takes the fun out of romcoms if you canā€™t buy into ā€˜will they won't they?ā€™ angle.

Oh, and there is a little delay on the new short story for Patreon. I decided to do another once over, as it needs more cringe pruning (I did post the art though, so enjoy).

The meme is indeed from the next video. Its context however, I shall leave to your imagination.

Iā€™m planning a few things around the release of the next video. New short story for Patreon (well old one updated really), as well as a staggered release of the handful of art assets I've commissioned for some of the videos so far. Because apparently people wanna see them - my favorite is Peter Griffin Saya.

I watched some of the new anime season. The Vtuber anime was pretty funny, and somewhat accurate which was also a pleasant surprise. I find that hobbies, sports or activity centric anime tend to miss the mark on the culture around it, or at least those who love those things tell me.

Depressed author isekai with an unfathomable ā€˜I can fix himā€™ aura was fun. I hope he turns his double jump river swim into a party event with all the girls he pulls with that 'minecraft neck-rope rizz' (not my words). Wonder if they can keep the joke going for 12 episodes though.

Everything else Iā€™ve seen so far has been a continuation. Season seems kinda light on big ticket stuff outside of sequels or remakes, if you have a recommendation throw it below.
