Hey there everyone,

hope you are doing well and enjoying yourselves as we gear up for summer. I decided I needed a break from the constant ten year flurry of remixes that I have released as I feel that the pool of songs to remix is decidedly much smaller than when I started. SO for now, once every two weeks I'll upload something for you to enjoy. Cant believe it has been TEN years since I started this channel and look where I am. But because I used copyrighted material, I am not eligible for the Partner Program where YouTube hands out awards for reaching 100K subscribers although now I have EIGHT times that amount now and it grows everyday. I wish I could get some recognition for what I have done here from them. I would love to be able to get official bragging rights, but that is all in my dreams due to the way YouTube rewards are set up. Oh well, maybe someday.

I was 18 when I got my first gig as a DJ for college radio. My shift was lunch on Thursdays and each DJ got to choose their own content I chose Top40. There was a rule that there be no disco on the radio show. OK, but I got around it with Boz Scaggs Lowdown. The rockers at the time understood that Boz was rock first and he got that respect by experimenting. I won that one with a majority vote that Lowdown was not a disco song and it stayed in my list for the next few weeks

But it was a different story for the college dances, I had to integrate the Top40 into a progressive rock format and was allowed to play disco. Those first dances went well, although I got flak from the progressive rockers for going commercial. The dances were supposed to make money for the student council and the old format was not condusive to that sharing of music genres. Being in Quebec brought in an extra layer of rock music sung in French that was popular at the time. I love those times! So much music and so little time to play it all.

I made sure to play the progressive rock as well as hard rock, pop, new wave, pop rock and disco and these dances became blowout affairs, usually reaching capacity crowds. The set up was two huge human size woofers along with tweeters, connected to an eq from the mixer and two turntables set directly on the table. Talk about gut shaking!

Requests were always honored and the crowd seemed happy at the end of the night. I think the unofficial theme was Jean Luc Ponty's "New Country" because his fiddling skills were superb! The song was a rock out loud crowd pleaser instrumental and I ended up playing it at every dance as it appealed to the folksy French Canadians as well as the disco crowd. It had a pounding beat with handclaps and then those bold energetic violin stabs took over and it was party hearty time. Everyone was out of breath by the time it ended so it was time for a couple of slow songs then back on to the higher energy stuff.

We rented hotel ballrooms for those dances and the set up and teardown were up to me and the bouncers hired to patrol the evening, usually football and hockey players. I would not drink a lot since I was on the job, I had a clear mind and purpose; to help my collegemates have fun and a safe good time.

We brought in things like a flashy light display and fog machines to the delight for the big disco contest that me me feel part of the club crowd. They got real happy hands that sometimes the table would take an accidental hit during a song, but I would just improvise as best as I could to cover it up by starting the next song which usually helped to forget what just happened and I can tell you it happened several times but never ended the evening. Other times I had to open the mike up to apologize while I figured out my next move.

There were a tough crowd that wanted to hear music they knew, and I kept the pipeline of new songs or new to me old favorites open by listening to the students as they passed me in the hall as they told me about the new Amii Stewart, Led Zeppelin or Chaka Khan. I made a point of buying those singles to be ready for the next dance.

Great News! I am going to get on the web, thanks to Ed Gordon who runs the Kings Of Spins website who got me a two hour gig on the UK Cracker Radio site each month for a radio show! As soon as I have more details, I will let you know. Geez this is as great as when SiriusXM did all my music for NYE 2020 for six hours. That means you will be able to listen to these songs on a real web radio! Hope this builds into something more. Whattya think? It should be coming soon. Whoopee!

I grew up with KTel and their outrageous selection of music throughout the 70's and when I took a serious turn towards DJing when they came out with their "Have A Nice day " 70's collection in the 90's and I bought every single one. someone has compiled the entire playlist and i highly suggest you check it out. at youtube.com/playlist?list=PLB...
