Some good nature news: The once extremely endangered Golden Lion Tamarin is not extremely endangered anymore. Still endangered but we'll take it.
The story: Golden lion tamarins are native to the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. To save the tamarin from extinction, some were relocated from small, isolated unsafe forests to União Biological Reserve and Poço das Antas Reserve. This conservation effort has been ongoing since 1991.
Despite the challenge of illness, the forty-two translocated golden lion tamarin population grew to over 200. By 2025, the number of protected golden lion tamarin is projected to be greater than 2000. What’s good for the tamarin - the conservation of rainforest space - is good news for all the other species of the Atlantic rainforest. Woohoo!
