@jeffreycreamer discusses whether or not you should use a kayak when learning packrafting skills, from “A Beginner’s Guide to Packrafting” podcast.
"That’s a great question and great discussion. I do own a play boat, but I’ve spent very little time in a hard shell. I’ve used it to learn to roll, which is way easier to learn in a hard shell. There are some skills not just rolling, but balance and edge control, where it is absolutely much easier to learn in a hard shell.
So from a skill development perspective, I would say at least at some stages in my development, I’ve surely handicapped myself to some degree by not switching between craft. And I advocate for all students in every stage of development, and also for myself, to spend more time in a hard shell and switch back and forth.”
On the other hand, if you feel like you already have the skillset that you aspire to attain, then there’s no not necessarily any value in spending time in a hard shell. In fact, it might end up purely being a penalty for you because swimming out of a kayak and rescuing yourself from a swim is a huge penalty. It’s a huge pain. And that’s one of the attractions of packrafts. The penalty for flipping and swimming is so much lower than it’s for a hard shell.”
