Chapter 7 on Organized Planning is the longest in the book, and as such, I have 4 notecards from it.

One of Hill's main points in this chapter-- and probably one of the biggest take aways from the book-- is that no one succeeds by accident.

Success always requires plans.

And these plans must be shifted and amended if they are not sound. In fact, it is almost guaranteed that we will need to keep altering our plan until we reach our final goal.

What are your thoughts on organized plans though? How important do you think they are?

You don't improve by fixating on others; you improve by fixating on yourself.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the one potential downside with competing.

Competing is about forcing ourselves to continuously improve. It's about making small steps everyday, so that we're a little better each day before we go to sleep.

But if progress becomes overtaken by a sheer desire to win then it is time to slow things down.

Winning is great, but I don't believe it should be the sole purpose of life.

The lessons learned while working on our goals is often infinitely better than completing them.

It's the journey towards success that forges us into new, better, more capable people.

That's why they say "quick success breeds egotism, slow success builds character."

Competing with ourselves can be great, but we should never stop caring about the process.

It's not about simply winning after all; it's about becoming the best we can be!

I hesitate to say this is the most important chapter in the book, because all chapters are equally important for developing a success-oriented mindset, but imagination is the source of immense power.

It's a shame how many of us mistake imagination to be something only kids use.

No wonder we get stuck in life.

As Hill said, "The only limitation is that which one sets up in their own mind."

How important do you think imagination is in being successful?

Only you can determine your worth. Nothing external can do it for you.

We often make the mistake of thinking the crowd equals power, but that's rarely ever the case.

The crowd mentality is often one of limitation-- it impedes our ability to truly think.

Why?
Because we feel our values must exactly align with the masses, and if they don't we're afraid to question them for fear of been ostracized by the mainstream.

That's why, I think, this quote makes perfect sense.

What are your thoughts though?

99% of the time when we compete with others and base our progress on theirs we will feel depressed and possibly begin to doubt our abilities.

Of course, sometimes this can inspire us to do better than we are, but in most cases, comparing ourselves with others demotivates us.

However, if we only compete with ourselves and focus only on our own progress we will feel empowered and motivated.

It seems like a fairly simple choice to me: focus on being the best you can and ignore the progress of others.

Everyone's journey is their own anyway.

So focus on who matters: you!

It's only through focusing on ourselves that significant progress can be made.

You're the best there is. Don't let the progress or success of others bring you down.

We live in a hyper competitive world where we see almost everyone as potential competition.

It’s no wonder most of us are stressed out to the max and riddled with health issues.

Competition can be productive if it’s friendly competition, but the fact of the matter is competition these days is rarely “friendly.”

So instead of aimlessly competing with others, which is a fruitless endeavor anyway, it’s a much better idea to just compete with yourself.

By shifting the focus from needing to beat others to needing to beat who you were yesterday, you will find your urge to compete is much more healthy.

Why is this?

It’s simple:

Often when we compete with others we are filled with negative emotions– fear of losing, envy that they are successful, worrying about whether or not we’re doing enough to “stay on top.”

No matter what way you look at it, this kind of thinking is toxic.

However, when we compete with ourselves we’re filled with positive emotions– enthusiasm to try to beat our old records, desire to become the best that we can be, pride in our accomplishments and successes no matter how big or small.

Also, the negative kind of competition– i.e. competition with others– often results in stagnation or even degradation of the self as we do literally anything to be the best,

But the positive kind of competition– competing against ourselves– often results in us becoming better and more capable.

And when we’re better and more capable, we’re more able to serve others.

You see the logic?

Competing relentlessly against others is not only toxic and harmful to our mental health and wellbeing, but it is also selfish.

To see others as potential competitors and not potential allies will corrupt any desire of helping others– you won’t want to help those you think might want to use your tactics against you, right?

So this week, let’s really focus on being the best we can be by competing only with ourselves.

I guarantee you’ll notice a massive sense of relief once you realize it’s you vs. you, not you vs. the world.

Be happy for others who succeed.

There’s enough prosperity and blessings for us all!
