Voice & Visions Triptych 3 of 3: “To Be Both” 🦋

In my years
of harboring this flesh
I have been hiding
shrinking
p e r f o r m i n g.

Too much, I think to myself.
Don’t be too much.

And so,
I wake each morning
and choose a new mask
most suited for the part
I am cast to play.

The shy & quiet Asian girl
The obedient & calm professional
The selfless & pleasing daughter
The good woman
always eager to say yes.

It’s all so exhausting.

But recently
I have learned
I can be both.

I can be loud
and I can be quiet.

I can be still
and I can be wild.

I can be selfish
and I can be devoted.

I can be dark
and I can be light.

I can say no
and I can say yes.

I can be everything all at once.

Or I can be nothing at all.

Voice & Visions Triptych 2 of 3: "I Call Out" 🌾

I call out
with my arms
o u t s t r e t c h e d.
Is anyone there?

I receive a reply
but it’s not
from who I expected.

It’s my inner wild
and
she’s yearning to break free.

You’ve locked me up,
she says.
And with that,
I cannot argue.

Voice & Visions Triptych 1 of 3: "The Blue Trail"

Tucked behind the busy streets
of my suburban enclave
is a place I go
to seek refuge

Away from the lights
and constant hum
of life’s demands.

I go to a place
that has become my sanctuary.
Home to the birds, deer,
flora and fauna.

I creep through the trees
roots, leaves and pebbles
beneath my feet

observing how the light
bends and breaks.

As I emerge
on the other side
I don’t hear much

Except the murmur
of the creek,
the pew pew pew
of the northern cardinal.

Everything is still.

And suddenly

I am humbled
and reminded

that I am so small.

A couple of weeks ago I was in an art show at my local used book store. This project was unexpectedly healing in so many ways. When I was little I wanted to be an artist. Once I got to high school I narrowed that down to wanting to be a photographer. I went to art school and reality set in: I actually didn't want to do this as a career. So I switched paths and became an archivist, a nod to my love for history and preserving the past. I’m so grateful to have made this a career for myself, but there remains a sense of loss and regret at shutting out my photography dreams. As the years went on I neglected photography and thus, slowly hid that part of myself. This project allowed me to reclaim the photographer and artist within that I’ve brushed aside for years. It’s reignited a spark in me and I am now energized and inspired to explore it again, on my terms. Join me for the journey behind the artwork and how it impacted me along the way.

This week I will be sharing my photography and poems I created for the art show, along with a video diary chronicling the journey which is now up! I invite you all to join me in this exploration of healing through art and celebration of returning home. Thank you friends (as always) for being here and supporting me 🧡

Hellooo Summer, friends! A new video will be going up tomorrow, June 25 at 11am EST. Join me for a slow start to the season as I romanticize my life with a creative art date, share my summer intentions, and talk about my summer reading list. I started filming this video at the beginning of June and I can't believe this month is almost over. I'm enjoying the slow process of filming throughout my month and am leaning more into the idea of monthly vlogs. Between work, photography commitments, my personal life, and rest (of course)...it's been hard this month to focus on YouTube. I know you guys understand where I'm coming from, but I never fail to feel a little bit guilty for not posting. But hey! That's the uncomfortable part of slowing down and escaping hustle culture, especially when it comes to creating content. Oh! And some fun news! I'm going to be in an art show in July, which I talk about in the video :) I'll be exhibiting digital photography prints and it's been incredible to lean back to my roots. I've been a photographer for nearly 20 years but haven't really done anything like this in a long time. It's been refreshing for me and I'm hoping to share behind the scenes of the process. I hope you all have been having a great month so far, wherever you are and whatever season it is <3
