The Neil Sachse Foundation was founded in 1995 by Neil Sachse, CEO following a sporting injury that left him a quadriplegic. During this time, the Neil Sachse Foundation has achieved a great deal. It has funded a $1.5 million, research project at Flinders University. This research centred on encouraging Schwan Cells to grow past the site of injury and return function. Three research papers were published -- one describing stimulating nerve fibres to grow past the site of the spinal cord injury and the second on a new method of identifying new nerve growth. The third Graft of pre-injured sural nerve promotes regeneration of corticospinal tract and functional recovery in rats with chronic spinal cord injury. A patent was also sought and obtained, however this has since expired.
This research was ground breaking in the field of spinal cord injury research and assisted in the volume of knowledge required to conquer this debilitating injury.
