I came across the body first approach on a well-being workshop and won’t be looking back! Here’s how it can transform our classroom cultures and put the children’s needs first.

… said nobody ever. Why would this be the best position for listening? Why do we use insist all pupils sit like this in school?

👂 How do you usually listen to podcasts? When you’re on a walk? Washing the pots? Cleaning the house? Does that stop you from listening well? I doubt it.

👂Maybe an auto-pilot task such as doodling or fiddling (think fidget spinners etc) could improve the concentration for all of our learners, not just those with extra sensory needs.

👂When you were a child, how did you listen best to a bedtime story? Lay down? Eyes closed? Sat up in bed? Legs crossed? Legs out straight? It probably differed each night depending on what you found most comfortable so you weren’t thinking about your positioning and could just enjoy the story.

👂Maybe we could let our students sit however they’re most comfortable so they can fully concentrate.

➡️ Do you allow this? Drop a ⭐️ in the comments if you do or would like to.

🎧I talk about this in more detail with some ideas on how to practically do this in class on my latest video (‘Body First Approach’ in Teacher Info Playlist)

You can’t expect children to bloom & thrive until their basic needs are met. Their needs are those barriers to learning that need to be addressed before a child is ready to learn.
❓Have they had their breakfast?
❓Do they need the toilet?
❓Are they comfortable? Warm enough?

Does your classroom ethos put the children’s needs BEFORE their academic attainment?

On my podcast episode 2: ‘The Body First Approach’ I provide some practical ways to do this that you probably haven’t considered before 🤔
